St. Mary's City is an historic site located in southern Maryland, in St. Mary's County. It was the first colonial settlement in Maryland and was the fourth English settlement in North America. Established in 1634, the city served as the capital of the Maryland colony until 1695 when it was moved to Annapolis.
St. Mary's City was founded by English settlers, led by Leonard Calvert, who sought religious freedom. It was also the site of the founding of Maryland's first colonial legislature, the Maryland General Assembly, in 1635.
Today, St. Mary's City is a living history museum that recreates life in the 17th century. Visitors can explore the reconstructed colonial buildings, such as the State House and the Governor's House, and learn about the lives of the people who lived there.
The site also includes Historic St. Mary's City, a museum and archaeological park that focuses on the historical and archaeological research of the area. It features exhibits on Native American cultures, colonial Maryland, and the events that led to the founding of the Maryland colony.
