Metlakatla City is a small community located on Annette Island in southeastern Alaska, United States. It is the only Indian reserve in Alaska and is home to the Metlakatla Indian Community, a federally recognized tribe of Tsimshian people. The community was founded in 1887 by William Duncan, a British missionary, and a group of Tsimshian converts who migrated from British Columbia, Canada. Metlakatla City has a population of around 1,300 people and is known for its strong cultural heritage and traditional Tsimshian practices. The economy of the community is primarily based on fishing and subsistence activities, with some tourism and small-scale logging activities as well.
