Deir ez-Zor City, also spelled Deir Ezzor or Deir al-Zor, is the capital city of the Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria. It is located on the banks of the Euphrates River and is one of the largest cities in eastern Syria. The city is known for its strategic location and has a rich history dating back thousands of years.
Deir ez-Zor City has seen significant conflict in recent years, particularly during the Syrian Civil War. It was under the control of the Islamic State (ISIS) from 2014 to 2017 before being retaken by Syrian government forces with the help of Russian military support.
The city has historically been an important trading hub due to its location on the Euphrates River and its proximity to major transportation routes. It has a diverse cultural heritage, with significant Arab, Kurdish, and Armenian populations.
Despite the destruction caused by the conflict, efforts have been made to rebuild the city and restore its infrastructure. Deir ez-Zor City remains an important economic and cultural center in eastern Syria.
