Bitburg Air Base (also known as Bitburg Airport) was a former United States Air Force base located near the town of Bitburg in Germany. It was originally opened in 1952 and served as a military airfield for the United States Air Force until its closure in 1994.
During its operation, Bitburg Air Base was primarily used as a tactical fighter base and housed various fighter squadrons and aircraft, including F-15 Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons. The base played a significant role in NATO's defense strategy during the Cold War, serving as a crucial asset for air defense operations in Europe.
In addition to its military operations, Bitburg Air Base had a civilian terminal that was used for limited commercial and charter flights. The airport facilitated travel for military personnel and their families, as well as for official government and diplomatic missions.
After the base was closed in 1994, the airport facilities were taken over by Frankfurt Hahn Airport and transformed into a regional cargo airport. Today, the airport is known as Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) and primarily serves as a hub for cargo operations, although some low-cost passenger flights also operate from the airport.
